March 2012 Library News

Longton Public Library
March 2012 News

Normally at this time of year I would be talking about the cold weather, but I haven’t really seen all that much of it this year, so far at least. (Knock on wood) But March is upon us and it is time once again for Spring Break for the schools – that time when teachers try to relax a little as the rest of us are stressed and notice a huge increase in the grocery bill for that week! Do your kids get “bored” too when school is out? My kids sure do, especially my 5th grader. By Monday they will be bored enough to be complaining about it.
Well the library is hoping to help give those “bored” kids something to help fill their days! We will be open EVERY WEEK DAY that week, yes, including Monday! We will be open Monday – Friday, March 19th through March 23rd. We have special activities scheduled for each day including a movie day, a board game day and a VERY special arts and crafts project for that week! The other two days events are being kept secret for now, so you’ll just have to come in to find out what we’re up to!
To top it all off, the whole week we will be running a contest for elementary students, the winners will be announced on Friday the 23rd with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place receiving prizes. So make sure the kids know, COME TO THE LIBRARY during spring break!
Any junior high or high school teens that could volunteer to help any of those days would be greatly appreciated…and remember, volunteering at the library helps when applying for college as we write letters of proof of your community service.
Make sure to check in often and watch the Prairie Star as we have new movies and books coming in all the time. We recently purchased new movies for kids all the way through rated R, all on DVD. Come find out what you’re missing!
Also – it is tax season, we have free public computers with internet access if you would like to file your taxes online, in some cases we may be able to offer assistance in completing your taxes as well.
We’re working on a way to keep our “Open” sign Open, so if it’s between 2-5 PM on Tuesday – Friday we ARE open unless there is another sign stating otherwise.
I look forward to seeing you all!

HAPPY 2012

What an exciting year 2011 was for the Longton Public Library! If you don’t know already, our library joined many other libraries around the state on the Koha system. This means our library is now automated and our patrons can search and request items from any of the libraries that use the Koha system. This has opened up our world to a wide variety of materials that our patrons now have access to, and have they ever been utilizing it! Our circulation numbers have soared through the roof! In addition, we have been purchasing quite a few new books in the last several months, so if you have not been in lately, you definitely need to come “check us out”! Also, our hours will be changing this year to be open again on Saturdays, starting in March. This will be great news to all of you who cannot visit us during our current hours, watch for more information on that in the coming months.

We wish you all a very happy 2012 – the best is yet to come!

How much do you save?

Have you ever wondered how much money you save each year by borrowing books, movies or other materials from our library versus buying the books, or renting movies, etc? Check out this Library Value Calculator and see how much you can save by using our library! If you check out an average of 8 books a month you’re saving $136.00 a month, that is $1,632 a year! Can you imagine? That is an average of two books per week. Or how about movies? Do you borrow movies from the library? Even if you only borrow 4 movies a month, you are saving $192 a year in rental fees. Check out the calculator yourself and determine how much money you are or could be saving!

WARM THOUGHTS FROM THE LONGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY

The weather has been keeping everybody indoors and it sounds like we’re not done yet.  A lot of folks have been stopping in to check out some books to read on these really cold winter nights.  Doesn’t that sound nice?  All cozied up at home, mug of hot chocolate on the table beside you, maybe some warm cookies and a great book in your hands.  That is my kind of day!  If it sounds like you too, then come check us out and check out the newer books on our shelves or our rotation books from the South East Kansas Library System.

If books aren’t your thing, then maybe you’d like to check out a movie.  Remember they’re free and you get to keep them for one week.

We are going to have to start charging fines on overdue or lost or damaged books.  The rule has been in place for a long time now, but we have not ever really enforced it much.  Please just be aware, if you have items checked out, there will be a fine on them if they are late being returned.  If you have any overdue items right now, please return them ASAP and we may be able to waive your fees for one time only.  If you cannot find the book or do not turn it in at all, you will be charged the amount of the book.  If the item(s) are still not returned or paid for, by law, you could be charged with theft and have to go to court, and we don’t want that for anyone in our community.  So please remember to return things on time.  You CAN renew items over the phone by calling us, or sending us an email at longtonbooks@yahoo.com

CONGRATULATIONS!!!  To all of our Library Board Trustees who all recently became certified by the state of Kansas to be Library Trustees.  They endured five different classes to earn this certification.  According to one source, Longton Public Library is the only library in Southeast Kansas to have their entire board certified.  Thank you and congratulations to:  Irma Bish, Bob Dougherty, J.R. Ferguson, Kathy Ferguson, Flora Fielder, Kay Miller and Avanelle Rankin.  They will be receiving their certificates during our February Board Meeting.

I want to remind everybody again about our website –Come check it out at http://longton.mykansaslibrary.org.

Our next board meeting is February 2nd at 5 PM at the library.
